Don’t Be Like that!

Paul wrote to Timothy about the last days. He mentioned how people would be.
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. (2 Timothy 3)

Listening to folks at work, in the news, and the neighborhood, it seems the prophecy has come true. I was talking with a couple of friends one day. On of them, Larry (not me), went on several river cruises in Europe, and was talking about how on every cruise there was always one person in the group who was a jerk. They were the people Paul was talking about. He said that in the last cruise he was on, there wasn’t anyone like that. Then the third person in our conversation asked if it was possible that Larry was the jerk that time? Larry had no answer for that question.

So, how can we make sure we do not become one of the people Paul is talking about? Can we protect ourselves? When we look at this scripture everything mentioned is the opposite of God’s grace and mercy toward us. Compare 2 Timothy 3:1-5 with 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
People will be lovers of themselves, Love is patient and kind
lovers of money, love is not jealous or boastful
boastful, Love does not insist on its own way
proud, abusive,
disobedient to their parents, Honor your father and your mother (Deut. 5:16)
ungrateful, unholy, it is not arrogant or rude
without love,
unforgiving, it is not irritable or resentful
slanderous,
without self-control,
brutal,
not lovers of the good, but rejoices in the right,
treacherous, Love bears all things,
rash believes all things,
conceited hopes all things,
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— endures all things
having a form of godliness but denying its power.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives that turns us from the things Paul mentions toward the love of God and our neighbor. Paul reminds us in Galatians 2:20 that Jesus lives through us.
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. God put His Spirit in us so we could react to life, all its ups and downs, in love.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5)

Ask the Lord to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Let that be the catalyst that accelerates your transformation into being Christ like in all your actions.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with y’all.

We Are Underway! This morning, the workshop “Faithful Leadership: Governing and Communicating the Mission of the Church” is taking place, organized by the Hispanic Ministries Mission Network (HMMN) of the Synod of the Sun.

(Salmos 94:19)

Culture and identity are lived and shared in community. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we give thanks for the families, friendships, and communities that have walked alongside us.

When we walk alongside others, every step feels lighter and every goal feels closer. Sharing a vision with others doesn’t just motivate us: it multiplies what we’re capable of achieving.

Our network keeps growing, and the invitation is open to you, your ministry, and your congregation.

Today, August 31, we observe the International Day for People of African Descent. This date is a vital opportunity to recognize the profound contributions, rich culture, and enduring resilience of African diaspora communities.
